Inbetweeners on top, Sin City takes a gut shot.

The Inbetweeners 2 got off to a great start this weekend, taking the number one spot with $3.1m, which is up from the first films $2.7m start in 2011. Obviously the brand is still strong in Australia, but it has to be noted that taking the setting down under was a smart move, it freshens the series for the domestic UK run whilst  piquing the interest of local fans to see how their own backyard is portrayed.

Guardians of the Galaxy continued to carry on strong, taking in $2.7m in its third week out ($19.1m total). The Hundred-Foot Journey showed only a very minor drop in attendance as strong word of mouth starts to come into play with $1.7m ($5.7m total)

Lucy also demonstrated strong hold with $1.1m ($12.9m total) and The Expendables 3 has begun to falloff fast from a lacklustre start with only $0.9m ($3.2m total).

Around the World

The Guardians of the Galaxy managed to get back to first place this weekend with $17.6m ($489m worldwide), unseating Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles which pulled in $16.8m in its third week out ($238m worldwide), GotG is on track to become the highest grossing film in the US domestic market this year when it overtakes Captain America: The Winter Soldier later this week.

Teen weepy, If I Stay opened to solid $16.3m.  If it holds on well and doesn't drop too hard in the coming weeks it should close above $40m. Let's Be Cops held over pretty well with $11m this weekend ($47 worldwide).

Sports drama When the Game Stands Tall was the other new release this week and took fifth place with $9m, which is in the low range for a sport movie but not too bad considering the limited press and $15m production budget.

The real loser this week was Sin City: A Dame to Kill For which opened in eighth place with $6.5m, that's a tragic start that'll almost definitely see the film close under $20m. This sequel should have been released hot on the heels of the original instalment back in 2005, a 9-year gap between films has seen pretty much all interest evaporate.
