Transformers: Age of Extinction predictably stomped all over the competition and claimed the number one spot with $8.8m ($10.1m total) in ticket sales this weekend. That's actually quite a bit lower the $13.3m Dark of the Moon opened to in 2011 and only a fraction lower than the $11m Revenge of the Fallen opened with in 2009. Chances are still it'll close over $20m in Australia, and the school holidays will certainly give it a bump. But the shine of Transformers might fading a bit for casual viewers.
22 Jump Street continued strong with $3.5m ($12.7m total) which is about on par the run Neighbours had earlier this year. How to Train Your Dragon 2 fell lightly to third thanks to the school holidays and took in $2.5m ($12.1m total). The Fault in Our Stars has started to cool off in its fourth week with $0.77m ($11.1m total) and Maleficent rounds out the top five with $0.70m ($13.8m total).
Around the World
Transformers: Age of Extinction smashed the global box office this weekend, debuting to $100m in the States and taking in over $310m worldwide in under three days. A staggering $90m of which came from China alone.
22 Jump Street was pushed into second spot with a $15.8m take in the U.S ($196m worldwide), it'll surpass 21 Jump Street's worldwide gross of $201m in about the time it takes you to finish reading this sentence. How to Train Your Dragon 2 dropped into third with $13.2m ($230m worldwide), it's currently looking to earn considerably less in the domestic market than its predecessor but is still on track to improve overseas.
Sequel to surprise 2012 hit Think Like a Man, Think Like a Man Too opened to quiet fanfare with $10.3m. With big budget action and comedy already covered in cinemas, this probably wasn't the greatest release date for the modest picture to open on. Maleficent rounds out the top five in the states with $8.3m ($587m worldwide).
