Seth Rogen and Zac Efron comedy Bad Neighbours capitalised on it's chart topping advance screening to take the number one spot this weekend with $4.7m ($7.3m total). That's a huge opening for an MA15+ rated original comedy, and the biggest of any of Seth Rogen's live action films released in Australia.
The Other Woman held on to second with $1.5m ($16.1m total), with some big openers coming this week this title might start to drop a bit more. Ironman director and sometimes actor Jon Faveru, got off to a good start with Chef taking in $0.8m, which is a pretty healthy figure for an indie film.
The Grand Budapest Hotel was narrowly behind Chef with $0.8m ($9.2m total) as well (there was less than $1000 difference in ticket sales at time of writing). Rounding out the top five and nosediving hard was Spider-Man 2: The Rise of Electro with $0.78m ($14.2m total). Spidey is all but played out now, and it appears unless something changes in the either the marketing or the films themselves, audiences will continue to stay away for the inevitable third chapter.
Around the World
Neighbours made its U.S debut and opened to an eye popping $51m ($85m worldwide), which is better than the most top end projections of under $50m. Word of mouth is solid, so it should hold nicely to finish its run north of $130m in the states.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 got knocked off the top spot after one week with a second week take of $37.2m ($550m worldwide) it'll just clear $200m in the US but is shaping up nicely in it's worldwide figures (it's made $55m in China alone), chances are its domestic run will be all but over with Godzilla stomping into cinemas this week.
The Other Woman settled for third place with $9.2m ($127m worldwide), Heaven Is For Real kept on keeping on with $7.0m ($75m U.S total) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier rounds out the top five with $5.6m ($695m worldwide).
